This was our first BookBubble read of 2022. A dark but compelling and beautifully written novel set during the Essex Witch trials. It is the story of Rebecca West, her mother the Beldam West, and others persecuted by the self-appointed Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins. A.K Blakemore’s lyrical and rhythmic writing evokes the fear,suspicion and unease in the community of Manningtree, the squalid conditions and brutal treatment of those on trial and the impossible decisions facing the accused. A powerful debut novel.
