Mexico – One for the Weekend

Historical fiction. Set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution and the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. From the day that old Nana Reja found an abandoned baby, the life of a small Mexican town changed forever. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is, for some locals, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who care for him as if he were their own. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder, because when he closes his eyes, he can see visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous. Followed by his protective swarm of bees, he lives to deliver his adoptive family from threats, Simonopio’s purpose in Linares will, in time, be divined.

The stifling, reclusive life of 19 year old Irma, recently married and then deserted, is turned on its head when a film crew arrives to make a movie about the strict religious Mennonite community in which she and her family live. She is drawn to the creative passion and warmth of their world but her domineering father is determined to keep her from it at all costs. The confrontation between them sets her on an irrevocable path towards something that feels like freedom as she and her young sister, Aggie, flee to Mexico City, sustained by their love for each other, even as they begin to understand the tragedy that has shaped their family.

Historical fantasy. Treated meanly by her immediate family in a small town in southern Mexico, Casiopea can only dream of another life. Until one day she accidentally frees an ancient Mayan God of Death - in return for her help in recovering his throne he offers her whatever she desires. And so Casiopea begins a a journey from the jungles of the Yucatan, to the border with the States, across Baja California and to Mexico City, crossing paths with figures from Mayan legends and taking her into Xibalba, the Mayan underworld.

Baja California. Cut off from the burdens of modern society, Rose and Elmer have created the perfect home and life for themselves and their five daughters, free to raise them as they see fit and to protect their secret. Their blissful existence is shaken when a young hiker shows up asking for a place to stay the night. As his questions become more intrusive and more suspicious, they start to think they have made a grave mistake. What they don’t know is that he has a secret, too. Even with so many places to run, there’s still no escape from the past that binds them.
